Overview

A mere 25km south of the bustling metropolis of Dar es Salaam lies a slice of paradise.  Ras Kutani rests between the deserted shores of the Indian Ocean and the quiet inlets of a freshwater lagoon, creating an idyllic barefoot hideaway.

The soul of Ras Kutani emanates from the never-ending stretches of creamy white sand, broken only by footprints and the lapping of the cool blue waves; this sought-after beach solitude is the foundation of pure relaxation and offers a stark contrast to East Africa's busier resorts.

Complementing the sound of the surf is the oasis of calm surrounding the lagoon, providing an ideal environment for stunning water birds.  Enhancing this watery setting is a lush backdrop of virgin coastal forest.  Ras Kutani supports, protects and enhances this rare ecosystem which boasts over 132 varieties of trees and is home to three species of monkey.

From the breathtaking views from the private hillside suites, down through the rustling palm trees, to the beachfront cottages, overlooking the warms waters of the Indian Ocean, is paradise personified: the perfect secluded beach retreat on the Swahili coast.

The Camp

Constructed from locally sustainable natural materials, the accommodation blends seamlessly into Ras Kutani’s exquisite environment, offering al fresco luxury living with a Swahili twist.

In the heart of the retreat lies the welcoming bar, open air lounge generously scattered with cushions creating the perfect ambience for evening cocktails and the expansive restaurant terrace with a ceiling of African stars.  The cuisine takes inspiration from the coast itself; from the vivid history of the Tanzanian coast and its infamous spice trade by serving fresh, locally caught, seafood with delicately spiced flavours to hosting wonderful convivial barbeques accompanied by an appetising variety of fresh salads and scrumptious desserts.

Cottages

Our nine beach cottages are scattered on either side of the main building, all with ocean views and gentle breezes.  Under the thatch, a spacious veranda unfurls with comfortable kikoi seating and lazy-making hammocks.  The hard wood shutters lead through to the beautifully decorated interiors; the majestic double bed and fan surrounded by a billowing mosquito net and on to the generous ensuite bathroom.

Suites

Perched on the hillside and offering definitive privacy, are four secluded suites.  Steps from the main building take guests deeper into the coastal forest, to their own secluded hideaway, where the only company you have are the chattering monkeys.  The cascading panoramic view down to the ocean is the quintessential tropical backdrop to the private plunge pool and array of outside seating.  The interiors are lusciously spacious and when the morning tea tray arrives, lie back in the vast Sultan double bed and let your eyes drift across the fluttering white curtains towards the azure seas below.

Hill House

The perfect way to end a family holiday or weekend is a stay at our family house.  As the name suggests, it too is situated above the main camp with blissful sea views.  The house comprises of two spacious ensuite rooms, linked by an expansive terrace with built in seating; an ideal space to swap holiday stories and enjoy each other’s company.
